IEC 60068-2-64 is an International Standard for random vibration testing. IEC 60068-2-64 random vibration testing is applicable for specimens exposed to random vibrations during transportation or operational environments, such as in aircraft, space vehicles, and land vehicles. This standard is primarily designed for unpackaged specimens and for items within their transportation containers when these containers are considered part of the specimen. In cases where the item is packaged, it is referred to as a product, and the combination of the item and its packaging is termed a test specimen.

The sequence in IEC 60068-2-64 is as follows:

- Random vibration testing; starting at low levels and stepping up to full level.
- Final (POST) vibration response investigation, if prescribed.
The PRE/POST vibration response investigations are typically performed to see if the resonant frequencies changed. A change in resonant frequencies indicates that there was a change in the structural integrity of the test specimen.
Before testing begins, the appropriate test severity levels, frequency range and duration must be selected. These are based on the specimen’s operational and dynamic environments. Then prior to the test, the item to be tested is visually inspected and/or functionally tested. The test item is attached to a vibration shaker. The random vibrations are applied for the specified duration. In some cases, the product can be operational and functional tested during the vibrations. After the test, the item tested is visually inspected and/or functionally tested verify its durability.
